Today I am struggling with the second day of an ibuprofen-resistant sinus headache. It's making everything I need to do seem ten times as hard. I really need to proofread more than usual too, since my brain is not working at full power.
(As an aside, be glad my husband reads my newsletters before you do!)
In any case, whiny days like these when you feel like dirt and just want to go take a nap are the days you need support. Sometimes you call your mom or your best friend. Maybe you email people who understand you. (My sister will certainly attest to that one.)
The key is to reach out. We are all human and no one is perfect. Today, I actually posted about my headache on Facebook and had a bunch of people offer suggestions. It's a small thing, but it brought home the fact that good people are out there, and a support network may be closer than you think.
Yet, many of us try to be heroic and tough everything out alone. That goes for personal stuff, but also business-related things. No one wants to admit that they aren't making enough money, don't always feel great, or don't enjoy what they're doing all the time.
We're all trying to be SuperMom (if you have kids), UltraSucessful Entrepreneur (if you own a business), Perfect Employee (if you have a job), Tireless Altruistic Rescuer (if you're doing humane work), and more.
Unfortunately, you're not. No one is perfect. I'm not saying you should wallow in self-pity, but you can't be Super Anything 24 hours of every day. Give yourself permission to be tired, and to be whiny every once in a while.
I read that Winston Churchill said, "The price of greatness is responsibility." The business of saving animals is important, and you do have a lot of responsibility. But give yourself a break when you need to. You'll go back and do what you need to do after the break. Big fuzzy smiles will be waiting for you when your headache has subsided and you feel better.
I'm sure of it because today I lived it.
